Richard Donner (with Margot Kidder)

December 18, 2006: Richard Donner Honored With Tesla Award

Richard Donner told SCI FI Wire he was "exceptionally honored" to win an award named after visionary film inventor Nikola Tesla at the International Press Academy awards on Dec. 17. Director and actor Richard Benjamin presented Donner with the award for "raising the bar on the superhero genre" and "creating astonishing special effects that not only predated computer-generated images, but often equaled or surpassed them."

Benjamin added that Donner created in his 1978 epic Superman a film "that had heart and soul and insisted that the comic-book superhero be treated with authenticity and respect for the source material, rather than as camp."

"It took me a long time to get this," said the 76-year-old Donner, holding up the trophy and acknowledging his wife and co-producer, Lauren Shuler Donner. "I'm here because my wife hired me once and continues to do so. We're going to be around for a long time."
