WETA Superman Returns Statues

August 9, 2006: Review - WETA “Superman Returns” Statues

By Steve Younis.

Today marks the release of the four Weta Limited "Superman Returns" sculptures. These four statues capture defining moments from Bryan Singer's movie. Working closely with the director, Weta's artists created this series of dramatic sculptures that really need to be seen to be appreciated fully.

I was lucky enough to receive one of the "Fallen Hero" statues, depicting Lex Luthor standing over the fallen Man of Steel.

Although I read that the statue was 16 inches long by 19 inches wide, and 22 inches high, it really didn't sink in just how big these statues are until it stood revealed from its packaging. These statues aren't just mere statues, they're display pieces deserving of museum treatment. Placing it on a shelf or table is almost impossible, because they're created to be enjoyed from every angle. I'm looking around for some kind of circular base that rotates to properly display the statue in my possession.

The statues are beautifully crafted, the likeness to Kevin Spacey in the "Fallen Hero" statue is uncanny. The attention to detail is superb, right down to the little diamond shaped fabric texture on Superman's costume and cape.

Fallen Hero A DVD is packaged with the statues, with an excellent behind-the-scenes featurette showing the process of creating the statues, from conceptualization and planning, through to sculpting and molding, before delivering the final product. It really gives you an appreciation for the work that went into making these statues. I hope this feature makes it on to the "Superman Returns" DVD at some point, to allow those who don't purchase one of these statues, the opportunity to appreciate the effort that went into creating these works of art.

I honestly can't say enough about how fantastic these statues are. I was honestly astonished at how beautiful the "Fallen Hero" statue is in real life... and (if I had the money) it was probably the one I would have been least likely to buy of the four.

Not having personally seen the other three statues; "Daily Planet", "Returning Son", and "Disaster Averted", I can only imagine how wonderful they must look up close... and I can only dream of one day owning all four.

If you can afford the NZ$528.89 asking price (which comes to around US$345) then I'd highly recommend you seriously look at purchasing one (or all) of these magnificent statues. You won't be disappointed.
