Time Warner Center

August 10, 2006: Superman Flies Over Time Warner Center

Superman may be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound but Time Warner Center in New York City is one edifice where he stuck around for a while.

Recently, during a three-day countdown to the opening of the movie, "Superman Returns," Superman's presence was observed in Time Warner Center's 90ft cable glass wall above Columbus Circle from 8:30 pm to 12:30 am nightly.

"When approached by Events in Motion, the full service event planning company representing Warner Bros. to project the Superman logo onto Time Warner Center, we immediately turned to Scharff Weisberg to explore the most impactful presence for the movie premier" said Edward T. Hilla, Vice President of Operations at Time Warner Center. "We turned to Scharff Weisberg, our preferred vendor, and together we developed the concept of hanging a 22.5 x 30-foot screen as the projection surface which could be seen from outside on Columbus Circle, Central Park South, 8th Avenue and from Central Park."

Scharff Weisberg provided the AV Stumpfl rear-projection screen and installed two Barco R12 projectors on the fourth floor of the shops at Time Warner Center. Content was furnished consisting of the bold Superman logo on a blue field along with the number of days until the film's premiere...two days, one day, tonight! The graphics were loaded onto a laptop and fed to the screen through an FSR switcher.

"We had a great reaction from customers, clients and fans of the movie," noted Hilla. "Scharff Weisberg did a wonderful job coordinating all of the production elements in a short period of time. The install was flawless, and Scharff Weisberg staff was onsite every night to ensure a very successful and smooth operation."

A. Fabien Leon was the Creative Director, responsible for the content on Time Warner Center's 12 plasma and LCD screens which played Superman trailers. Jason Block was the project manager for Scharff Weisberg and William Stonecypher from Stone Pro Rigging managed all rigging and screen suspensions.
