July 10, 2006: “Superman Returns” Hits $142 Million

While the new "Pirates" movie has taken the box office by storm, breaking the opening weekend record set by "Spider-Man", "Superman Returns" managed to take in an estimated $21.9 million at the box office this weekend, coming in at a respectable second place, with $142 million in its first 12 days of release.

It should be noted that "Dead Man's Chest" is a sequel, reaping benefits of a prior audience and DVD sales of the first film over the past few years. Superman has been missing from the big screen since 1987's "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace". The first "Pirates" film took in less money at the box office compared to "Superman Returns" at this same point in time.

While "Superman Returns" is now in second place behind "Dead Man's Chest", it's still ahead of "Batman Begins", the original "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, and "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring", the latter two of which went on to do over $300 million domestically at the box office.

"Superman Returns" is still on track to earn big money worldwide, with the movie due to be released in the U.K. and Europe this month.
