Who's Who in the Superman Comics

Special Crimes Unit (S.C.U.)

A special unit of the Metropolis Police Department, led by Inspector Maggie Sawyer and including Dan Turpin. The unit operates city-wide and is answerable to the Police Commissioner. Its mission is to handle unusual disturbances, especially those involving metahumans and super-villains. Its members use special high tech weaponry often supplied by S.T.A.R Labs. The S.C.U.'s success has inspired several other cities to set up similar units. The S.C.U. was recently ordered to recruit new Meta-human members to the team (AOS #569) and has been aided technically by the return to Metropolis of John Henry Irons (aka Steel).

After the events of "Our Worlds At War", John Henry was forced into an ancillary role. Maggie Sawyer transferred to Gotham Central, and Lt. Lupe Leocardia moved in to fill the hole. Turpin is still around, though he's seen less often, and the SCU has played a large role of late in helping Superman subdue major threats such as Ruin.

First Appearance (use of SCU's name): SUP #7 (July 1987)
