Who's Who in the Superman Comics

Zatanna the Magician

Zatanna is the daughter of Golden Age crimefighter John Zatara and Sindella, a member of the homo magi race. The homo magi are born with inherit mystical powers. With such magically adept parents, it was natural for Zatanna Zatara to become a magical, mystical crimefighter in her own right. As a teenager, Zatanna became separated from her father, and went on a worldwide search for him. During her adventures, she came across several heroes, such as Hawkman, The Atom, and of course, Superman. Displaying her magical abilities and true courage, Zatanna won the hearts of the heroes, who eventually encouraged her to join the Justice League of America. As a member of the JLA, Zatanna continuously proved her worth, and did her part to save the planet countless times.

Eventually, the young sorceress left active status to explore the extent of her powers, and even enhance them. Over time she has become one of the foremost experts of magic, alongside such powerful beings as Dr. Fate, The Spectre, and The Phantom Stranger. In recent times, Zatanna exhibited her true capabilities by utilizing Superman and other Justice League members in a ceremony which mystically rebuilt a devastated Metropolis. Superman, and the rest of Metropolis's citizenry will forever be grateful for the talents and powers of Zatanna the Magician.

Few can compare to the likes of Ms. Zatanna Zatara. By pronouncing her spells backwards, she can manipulate pure matter to do her bidding. While she claims it is a way of channeling her powers, the backwards-speaking of Zatanna is a running joke among several heroes, especially The Flash.
