Who's Who in the Superman Comics

The Atom

The Atom

One of Earth's greatest heroes, The Atom is capable of shrinking to microscopic proportions, while adjusting his strength. For instance, he can shrink to miniscule size, but still knock out a thug, by retaining the power of a 6', 180 lb man.

The Atom's true identity is Ray Palmer, and he is a physics professor at Ivy University in Ivy Town, Connecticut. Throughout his superheroic career, The Atom has helped Superman several times. Superman has relied on The Atom's invaluable scientific genius to combat super viruses, hazardous microtechnology, and supreme crimefighting capabilities.

A legendary member of the Justice League of America, it was as teammates in the JLA in which Superman and Atom built their friendship. Of late, The Atom helped Superman defeat Brainiac, and was one of the heroes who helped cure Superman of a deadly infection.

Most recently, the Atom's ex-wife, Jean Loring, was arrested for the murders of Sue Dibny (the Elongated Man's wife) and Jack Drake (the third Robin's father) in a crazed attempt to reconcile with the Atom. Loring also made similar threats toward Lois Lane Kent. After leaving Loring at Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane, the Atom disappeared from sight and has not been seen since.
