Bruce, Diana and Clark share moments of reflection and it is clear that Diana is missing home.
The two men realize that they have been neglecting the Amazon and vow to help her locate Themyscira.
The three heroes head to the rough location but instead of the legendary island they discover a giant whirlpool and realize it is a portal. A small boat is being sucked into the portal so the heroes race to save it and any passengers that may be in peril.
The vacuum proves too strong and Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman find themselves pulled to a strange new world. They each have a hinderance, Batman's plane and gadgets were lost in the journey and have left him uneasy in a world governed by magic. Superman has lost his abilities and Wonder Woman is blind.
They decide to explore and discover an aircraft from the Vietnam War covered in foliage. The Trinity are immediately put to the test when they are attacked. Wonder Woman may be blind but she is far from defenseless and using her knowledge she realizes where they are and that the pilot may be their only way out.
Who is he and, with their hindered abilities to protect themselves, will they make it back to their own world alive?
To be continued...
Story - 5: An unexpected issue, but one that will resonate for a long time to come. The psychological toll is something not often dealt with in comics and the one to one with Diana, Clark and Bruce was very enlightening. The appearance of a certain... Warlord made the issue even more of a favorite. If you are a fan of Travis Morgan, this rebirth debut will make you cheer out loud.
The links to the heroes' abilities and their psychological impact cites why Robinson is such a fantastic storyteller. Seeing Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman so vulnerable was fascinating. I loved every second of the issue and I think you will find a certain sword and sorcery champion's reappearance a real treat.
Art - 5: Some of the scenes are challenging for an artist, not the fight scenes or the action sequences, those are everywhere you look in comics. I am talking about conveying the psychological elements of the book. Zircher's art gives the story a new layer that helps give the reader, or me at least, a connection to the heroes. The action was spectacular and Superman had some stand out panels, especially the race to save the stricken boat.
Cover Art - 4: A powerful image of Wonder Woman fighting off reptilian creatures. It looks great, colored well but the negative for me is that Superman and Batman are relegated to the side of the image. It feels a little like a video sequence that someone hit the pause button on a few seconds too late as it was panning across.
Variant Cover Art - 4: I really like this cover. The Trinity are valiantly fighting for survival against a herd of tyrannosaurus, what is not to love? Covers by Sienkiewicz are always symbolic and pushing boundaries. I love the painted, almost mystic look of this.
