Justice League

November 13, 2001: The Justice League is Coming!

Zap2It.com recently published a great article about the up-coming "Justice League" animated series. Titled "Evil Doers Beware, 'Justice League' Returns" and written by Eric Almendral, the article discusses the history behind how the series came about. Here's a small excerpt from the article, which also contains a great image gallery:

Justice League The cartoon world is in danger. Invaders from Japan threaten to conquer everything in sight with their armies of Pokemon clones. Adding insult to injury, aliens are destroying Metropolis and pummeling the world's finest heroes, Batman and Superman, with their lasers. If the boys in black and blue don't get some help, the end could be at hand.

Though the aforementioned Man of Steel and Caped Crusader have had some of their greatest animated moments over the past 10 years under the guidance of Emmy-award winning animator Bruce Timm, comicdom's premier superteam, the Justice League, has been in TV retirement since the "Super Friends" went off the air in 1985. When Timm's bosses at Warner Bros. Animation proposed a reunion of DC Comics' mightiest heroes, Timm was hesitant to take on the project. "I'm actually quoted in print as saying I would never do a Justice League show," he says. "For years, that's been the number one question from the fans."

Justice League The WB network, home to the recent "Batman" and "Superman" series, was originally interested in airing a new show based on the Justice League, but wanted a version that appealed to their young, Cap'n Crunching audience. "What they were really interested in doing was Batman training a bunch of junior superheroes," Timm says. As Creator/Producer of "Justice League" , he felt an obligation to present a show that was both fresh and faithful to fans' expectations, so he pitched the concept to Cartoon Network. "I called up Mike Lazzo [Cartoon Network's senior vice president of programming] and said we were talking about doing a 'Justice League' show, an updated version of the 'Super Friends' and he said, 'Great, how many you want to do?' We were committed from that point on."
