TV Guide - Smallville Covers

December 3, 2001: TV Guide "Smallville" Issue - Coming Next Week!

The December 8th issue of TV Guide will feature four Smallville-related covers by incredible comic painter Alex Ross and a Smallville comic book-style story drawn by Terry (Harley Quinn) Dodson.

Two special "back and front" versions can be bought online at the TV Guide Store.

Following is the TV Guide Press Release about this edition of the magazine:

TV Guide® magazine is devoting its December 8 cover story (on newsstands December 3) to Smallville, the hot new show which is putting a new spin on the teen years of Clark Kent.

The first-year show is already The WB's second-highest rated series, and ranks fourth among all the networks' new shows this season for viewers 12-17. The new hit offers a clever, contemporary twist on the Superman legacy, focusing on the years when young Clark Kent's extraordinary powers are beginning to emerge.

TV Guide is treating fans of the The WB's breakout show, as well as generations of Superman and comic book faithful, to an extensive package that includes:

FOUR ALEX ROSS SMALLVILLE COLLECTOR'S COVERS: TV Guide is producing four different covers by Alex Ross, whose prior interpretations of Superman are legendary and award-winning. Put side-by-side, the four cover illustrations interlock; the first three are realistic comic book-style interpretations of the three leads in Smallville - the young, attractive actors who play Clark Kent (Tom Welling), Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) and Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum). They blend into the fourth cover, which depicts the future - Superman, flying, in full famous costume, drawn in the famous Ross style.

KEVIN SMITH ESSAY -- WHY WE NEED SUPERMAN MORE THAN EVER: Feature film writer-director Kevin Smith ("Clerks," "Chasing Amy," "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back") writes that in these perilous times, we need Superman more than ever. Smith, who also is writing DC Comics' hottest-selling title, Green Arrow, notes: "Superman is the Ultimate Immigrant and, therefore, the Ultimate American, a foreigner who came here and made something of himself. He works hard, pays his bills and still finds time to stop Brainiac from enslaving Earth."

INTERVIEWS FROM THE SMALLVILLE SET IN VANCOUVER: TV Guide was on the show's set in Vancouver and interviewed the crew and cast members. John Schneider, who plays Clark's father, Jonathan Kent, sums up the show's successful chemistry: "The show is as freaky as The X-Files, as teen-angst driven as Dawson's Creek and as family oriented as 7th Heaven."

NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN, FOUR-PAGE SMALLVILLE COMIC ADVENTURE: In a TV Guide exclusive, DC Comics presents a four-page comic adventure featuring Smallville characters and tying into the television series. It was penciled and inked by Terry & Rachel Dodson of DC's popular monthly title, Harley Quinn.

Kevin Smith's article "A Superman For All Seasons" is available at the TV Guide website for all to read.

TV Guide are also running a poll asking fans which actor was their personal favorite Superman. Vote now!
