Smallville

February 6, 2001: "Smallville" Pilot Script Review

As has been previously reported, Smallville is the story of Clark Kent growing up in his small town American farming community where he's on the outs with everybody because of his geeky nature (so, naturally, an actor/model was hired rather than Crispin Glover, the obvious choice). In the pilot episode, he meets Lex Luthor when Luthor's sports car plows right into him and goes off a bridge into a river. Clark isn't scratched and he saves Luthor's life. At the end of the episode, in a curious fashion, those roles are reversed.

Here's the weird thing. I don't want to give too much away, but a girl's parents were killed by a meteorite crashing out of space. As a remembrance of them, she wears a shard of the meteorite on a necklace around her neck. You guessed it, Kryptonite. So, it may appear to others that ol' Clark gets weak in the knees around her because of a crush, but it's really that potent necklace.

More interesting stuff includes the Lex versus his Rich Father complex which is one of the reasons it looks like Lex is going to be a semi-sympathetic character in this series. He's older, sure, but he's in town to run one of his father's plants and turn it into a booming biz. He's got the dough and, obviously, the car, but he's an unhappy, driven fellow.

If you're looking for a triangle involving Clark's love interest of Lana and Lex, well, Clark's 15 so that would be illegal. However, the boasting football players (who producers Tollin/Robbins had as heroes in Varsity Blues, but tormentors now) are the ones who shuttle Lana around as she's dating the quarterback.

Was Smallville a good script? Well, part of me really, really likes the idea of having a Roswell-esque show where the mythology is built in and the characters are all familiar, except that here's a new show that's going to add a lot more to the mix. The other part of me knows how easily something like this could be screwed up. Buffy has made mythology-infused one-hour dramas aimed at teens a staple of pilot season. Here's hoping that this one doesn't suck.
