September 13, 2001: Praise for Tom Welling
An article written by Zap2it.com's reporter Vanessa Sibbald comments on the new faces we'll see starring in this fall's new TV programs. Titled "Newcomers cast their lots in new fall programs", the article had this to say about Smallville's Tom Welling...Tom Welling, "Smallville" on WB -- If WB can do one thing well, it's finding great stars-in-the-making for its high-profile shows. That's exactly what Welling is in the live-action drama "Smallville," which follows Clark Kent/Superman in high school as he learns about and develops his powers. Not since "Dawson's Creek" has a WB show had such a strong male lead, and Welling seems to be the perfect fit for the coming-of-age show. He doesn't have much experience, but he'll make audiences overlook an obviously mid-20s man playing a high school freshman. We're confident he will be the main reason to tune into "Smallville". Here's a prediction: Welling will be a movie star in two years. If not, then WB's marketing machine had better get a checkup.
