September 9, 2001: Teen.com "Smallville" Interview

Teen.com have conducted an interview with Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum about their roles in the up-coming TV series, "Smallville". Below is a short excerpt from the interview:

The Boys of Smallville

This fall on The WB, discover the origins of Superman as the new series Smallville explores the teenage years of Clark Kent growing up in the farm town. Clark goes through normal teenage problems like nervous crushes and feeling like an outcast, only he has to also control his developing superpowers and allergies to kryptonite. Tom Welling plays Clark, and he can't help but feel some pressure to measure up to the legend.

"There's pressure," Welling admits. "There's pressure that comes from just having to be there everyday and having to work and there's also the added pressure of being one of the central characters as well. I think you just take it day by day and go with it. I feel fortunate that we're shooting in Vancouver [instead of L.A.]. We're able to kind of focus on what we're doing a little bit more and the shooting schedule doesn't leave much choice."

Welling debuted with a role on Judging Amy and he embraces the challenge of playing a cultural icon such as Clark Kent.

"I'm excited," Welling says. "I think it's a great show which takes a little bit of the pressure off. The writing's so great. There was actually a time when we were working on a scene for about 15 or 20 minutes. All of a sudden John [Schneider, who plays Clark's father] stopped and looked at us. We were like, 'Are you okay?' and he said, 'Isn't it great to work this scene so many times over and each time we do it find more in the different layers involved in the story?' When you really do have that kind of story and that kind of writing and that kind of material to work with, it takes some of the pressure off you."
