Smallville

June 27, 2001: "Smallville" Pilot Episode Reviews

Both the Corona Coming Attractions and Dark Horizons websites have posted reviews of the Smallville pilot episode. Below is an excerpt from the Corona review:

"My early guesses were right: it's Dawson's Creek meets Superman...or in this case, Superboy. Well, really a superpowered Clark Kent. No Superman costume. No Lois Lane, no Metropolis (except for a throwaway mention on the back of a license plate), no Fortress of Solitude...just a teenage Clark going to school and learning he's different from all the rest of his class.

"Smallville literally starts off with a bang. It's 1989, and Jonathan and Martha Kent (played by Rob Schneider and Cynthia Ettinger) and their small town suddenly finds themselves at ground zero for a devastating meteor shower. As the meteors blast apart Smallville's town center, miles away the Kents truck gets knocked off the road from a nearby blast. Now as much as it seems to be borrowed from the opening sequence of Armageddon and sounds lame, the effects for this sequence looked really cool. The FX guys actually bothered to get the smoke trails for the meteors looking authentic, and the explosions in Smallville looked amazing. The town is literally blown apart."
