Clark Kent (Tom Welling)

October 13, 2001: Chicago Tribune Interview Tom Welling

The Chicago Tribune recently interviewed Tom Welling about his role as Clark Kent in the "Smallville" TV series. Below is a small excerpt from that interview...

Tom Welling doesn't wear a cape on the set of "Smallville," but he's still soaring over his new starring role as a teen Superman.

"Smallville," WB's most talked-about new series, kicks off at 8pm Central Time Tuesday on WGN-Ch. 9 and follows Clark Kent before he flies off to protect the citizens of Metropolis.

Welling, a 24-year-old New York native, likes that he doesn't have to wear a costume. That grounds the show in reality, he says. But, he adds, "Smallville" retains enough classic elements of Superman to entertain die-hard fans and introduce a new generation to the Super-saga.
