Animated Justice League

July 23, 2001: Animated Justice League Update

Thanks once again to The World's Finest News website, we have more news on the up-coming Justice League Animated Series. Shaun McGalughlin, speaking at the San Diego Comic Con, dropped some more tidbits on what to expect and look forward to, including aspects of the show, and the show itself. Here are some brief excerpts on what he said:

  • There will be a Mongul episode which will be titled Warworld. In it, Superman is kidnapped and forced to play in gladiator-type games.

  • The Injustice Gang episode is silly, but with a darker edge to it. It's really a lot of fun. Part of the silliness could be due to the appearance of Copperhead, who is only there because he's a favorite of James Tucker. Shaun's telling of the story suggests that no one else wanted to have Copperhead in there - but the fact that he is there makes you think they have an idea to make it work.

  • Shaun also stated that the show's episode format will be a 90-minute pilot, 10 1-hour episodes (aired as 30-minute two-parters), and a 90-minute season finale. Judging from what Shaun said, and past news, here's what the we know about the episodes:

  • The pilot episode, Secret Origins, is an alien invasion story (and, possibly, a Martian Manhunter-driven story) that brings the League together.

    The one-hour episodes include:

  • An Aquaman episode.
  • A Wonder Woman episode with Felix Faust as the villain.
  • A Green Lantern episode with the Manhunters (based on JLA #140-141).
  • Warworld, a Superman episode featuring Mongul.
  • An Injustice Gang episode.
  • A Flash-GL team up against Grodd (or perhaps the Ultra-Humanite, since there was no Grodd character design shown) mentioned by Paul Dini.
  • And four others (I would assume one would focus on Hawkgirl and another on the Flash, and one on Batman -- just to be fair. Bruce mentioned that the JSA will be used in one form or another, but that could be the finale).

  • Shaun mentioned that a representative of Warner Home Video has expressed interest in releasing the Justice League series on video and DVD. When and if it would be released has not yet been discussed.
