September 1, 2001: "Smallville" - The Media Hype Begins!

Is it just me, or would Perry White be outraged over the media sensationalism surrounding "Smallville" at the moment?

Seriously, here are some of the headlines from actual news articles published by top rating "News" outlets around the world:

It all started with the fairly tame:

  • Superman is back, but with a change of wardrobe (Reuters)

The above article seems to have attracted the attention of other (so-called) News outlets who have come out with:

  • Undressed for Success? (LA Times)

    And how about this one...

  • Superman drops pants for TV show (BBC News)

The BBC News have even gone so far as to create a poll they want people to vote on which asks:

Should Superman keep his pants on?

    Can you believe it?!

Do they even know what this show is about? Do they do any research before writing and publishing stories that have no basis in fact?

Maybe I'm just too close to this all... whatever... the fact remains that they all seem to be focusing on the fact that this is a "Superman" show without a Superman costume. Okay, let's examine the facts:

    1. "Smallville" is a show about a teenage Clark Kent (in the pilot episode he's 15).
    2. In all recent tellings of the Superman mythos (today's comics, "Lois & Clark" TV show, the Christopher Reeve Movies, Superman: The Animated Series), Clark Kent didn't become Superman till he was in his early twenties, and not until he went to Metropolis to become a reporter.

So what's the big deal!? Why the media frenzy?

In other "Smallville" news, E-Online is running a poll asking TV viewers if they'll watch "Smallville" or pass on it altogether. Place your vote now!
