October 15, 2001: Jeph Loeb Talks "Smallville"

Jeph Loeb regularly visits the DC Comics Online Message Boards, and recently he was asked about "Smallville". This is what he had to say:

"I've seen the Smallville pilot and like it quite a lot. It is definitely a reinterpretation of the legend, but one that holds up quite well (moments remind me of the Glenn Ford section of the Superman Movie).

Lana is *hot*. No more needs to be said on that.

As to DC's involvment, that's a Mike Carlin question, not mine.

I DID meet with the folks who produced the show and wrote the pilot, more out of the "I work in Television" part of it, than "we wanted to meet the comic book guy" part of it. They are, indeed, respectful to the material and very complimentary to the Superman books and to Superman For All Seasons. Good gang of folks.

Mostly, I hope the show is a hit because anything that is good for Superman is good for comics. I'm sure there will be some fans who don't like it because it IS so different, but I see the similarities and find them to be good springboards for further shows. May they have a hundred episodes!

Jeph"
