Animated Justice League

July 31, 2001: More Animated Justice League News

Comics2Film reporter Xum Yukinori has handed in some excellent reports recently from the Justice League panel at the recent Comic-Con in San Diego.

Producer Bruce Timm described Justice League as, "the Superfriends for a new generation." Timm stressed that the show will take a traditional approach to the Justice League.

"This is such a big thing for comic book fans, for DC Comics, and for us, that we wanted to make sure we do the show right," Timm said. "Based on what we've seen -- other attempts to do this kind of show in the past in cartoons -- we needed to go with the big guns, we needed to put the 'big seven' in there."

Timm did mention that overall the show will edge more toward Grant Morrison's take of the JLA, but the show will not be as dark or as complicated. "The thing we found with the Grant Morrison comics that we liked is that the group was more of a dysfunctional family. Not that they bicker all the time, but they weren't like 'let's be nice and get along and be the happy Superfriends.'"

Head writer Rich Fogel added that their approach to the characters was heavily influenced by the overall group dynamic. "Each character has a specific role and we understand how they fit in and how they react to one another. We're trying to get really specific with what their concerns are and what issues they care about. It's like The West Wing with super powers."

Timm mentioned how they researched the group dynamic by rereading thousands of comics -- not just JLA but other team comics like The Avengers, The Fantastic Four and others. "We've found a lot of bickering," he concluded.

Finally, Timm promised that the show would be filled with action. "One of the things that we've realized early on with this show is when you get this much super power in one group, you have to up the ante. You can't have them fighting a bunch of thugs in a warehouse anymore. So we'll be tossing planets and stuff at them all the time. It makes the show difficult, but fun, to do."
