December 20, 2001: Sam Jones III "Smallville" Interview

In an interview titled "For Pete's Sake", Zap2It.com's writer Kate O'Hare talks with Sam Jones III who plays Pete Ross in the TV show "Smallville". The interview even mentions this website. :) Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Fans of the Superman comic books are very familiar with Pete Ross, who was born near Smallville, and knew Clark Kent growing up. Apparently, there was a Pete-Lana Lang-Clark triangle of sorts, but Pete and Lana eventually married.

He even wound up as the running mate of Lex Luthor in the megalomaniac's bid for the presidency (thanks to www.supermanhomepage.com for the info).

Whether any of this happens on The WB's Tuesday-night teen-Superman drama "Smallville" is anyone's guess, but there have already been some changes made to Pete's character for the latest TV-series reinterpretation of the classic tale.

"I've been lucky," says Sam Jones III, who plays Pete, calling in from the show's location in Vancouver, Canada, "because Pete is actually a Caucasian character in the comic books, and obviously I'm not white. I like that, because I feel like I broke a barrier. Not only am I not playing a stereotypical character, I'm playing a character that was originally white."

"That's like casting color-blind, you go for the best actor. They looked at a lot of white people for the role. They looked at Asians. They looked at all ethnicities for this part, then I got the part. I feel extremely excited about that. No matter if Denzel Washington got the part, as long as he's black, there's going to be a little controversy at first."
