January 22, 2001: Superman Teams Go "Up, Up and Away" - For a Month

All the Superman titles' regular line-up of creators are taking a month to give themselves some breathing room to prepare for this summer's big event storyline which kicks off in May, so in their place DC has recruited the writing and penciling team of veteran Marv Wolfman and newcomer Paco Medina (Man of Steel #108) to tell a four-part story running through all the April monthly titles. Each chapter also features a cover by... an artist who's doing his first-ever work for DC Comics. Figure out who yet..?

Entitled Infestation, according to Wolfman, it's a "sweeping space saga/love story that's probably the first time I've ever written Superman pretty much the way I've always thought I'd like to write him."

"In the past I've always written the character, whether in comics or animation, the way the editor wanted the book to go," said the writer. "Superman editor Eddie Berganza just asked me to write a big cosmic story, and that's what I've always wanted to do. When I was growing up reading the Mort Weisinger era stories, they all seemed to begin with a caption that read, 'After returning from a mission in space...' And then Superman would get embroiled in some silly "Lois tries to discover his secret identity" story. I always used to say, 'Whoa... back up. Can I see that space story?' Now you will."
