JLA: Our Worlds At War #1

July 9, 2001: Loeb Talks "Our Worlds At War"

Newsarama caught up with Jeph Loeb recently to ask a few questions about his overall plan for the Superman crossover story, "Our Worlds at War".

Here's a small portion of the interview (WARNING! Contains spoilers)...

Q: Speaking specifically about JLA:OWAW for a minute, overall, you spent an issue to show the JLA getting the big beat down by Imperiex. Again, you were shooting for showing people that this is a serious war, not just the battle du jour, right?

JL: Right. Basically, you've got the League out of it for the war. Boom. Imperiex ripped Martian Manhunter's eyeball out and blasted him into putty. He put Plas, GL, Flash into the hospital and Wonder Woman is in the worst shape of all of them. You have major cities all over the world - gone in Russia, Germany, Africa - the center of every continent. And this f***er has never been beaten. We're only here because he cleansed a previous universe to make way for ours.

What happened in X-Men this week? They fought a guy with a blowtorch. Spider-Man - he's running around with a 50 year old version of himself. You want the action, drama, and suspense of what a comic book is all about -- you have to be reading the Superman titles. That's the fact, Jack!

Q: Back to one of the tougher questions from JLA: OWAW - is Aquaman dead?

JL: Aquaman is outta here. You've seen the scene. It's not like the next issue of Superman has him out looking for him. He can't. The world is on f***ing fire.

Aquaman is gone. He got blown away in a battle with Imperiex in an effort to save Atlantis using the theory; the ocean covers 3/4 of the planet and if Atlantis falls, so falls the world. Only two people have defeated an Imperiex Probe. That's a probe, mind you, not Imperiex himself. Superman...and Aquaman. One on one. Wonder Woman took one out - and she's in critical condition, but only after Aquaman and Superman blasted it pretty damn good. A hero. A king. A friend. And the war is just getting started.
