Superman #172

July 2, 2001: Loeb Talks "Our Worlds At War"

WizardWorld.com got a chance to catch up with Jeph Loeb and talk to him about this summer's DC crossover, "Our Worlds At War." With Superman as the focal point, "Our Worlds at War" fights across the land and skies of the DC Universe. Just about every familiar face is involved, and some get changed in ways you'd never expect. Here is a small portion of the Wizard World interview with Jeph Loeb:

Q: As a fan, what is it about Superman and DC that appeals to you?

Loeb: In the past, people often knew what was going to happen. There weren't that many surprises. Now, since we got on, no one knows what will happen next month in the titles. This is why I got into comics. It is hard to surprise people today because of the Internet and Previews and that's terrific but they often spoil the story.

Don't get me wrong. In the past, there some truly amazing tales like the "Reign of Superman". We got great new characters out of it like Steel, a new Superboy and Cyborg. But, for me, the big attraction of that story was I didn't know where it was going or how it was going to end. That is so important for the story to work.

Right now, we want to beef up Superman's rogue's gallery. We want to show how great his villains are. It's great to have Bizarro #1 back and Krypto. DC has let us bring back some really cool characters -- but we have also tried to bring in some new blood like Imperiex, Scorch, Mongal, Overmind, Kancer, and Ignition.
