San Diego Comic Con

July 21, 2001: Fresh from the San Diego Comic Con 2001

Thanks to our good friend Michael Loveland at Miqque On The Web, we have the following report on the DC Comics "Superman" panel direct from the San Diego Comic Con:

Superman May Be Blown Away By "Our Worlds At War"

  • One scoop! Joe Kelly was 'on' the panel via cell phone, having just (within hours?) become a new Dad to a son. Congrats to the Kellys!

  • Besides demolishing Topeka, Kansas in the opening acts of the "Our Worlds At War" saga, the panel revealed that more characters are going to die. Some suddenly without any preparation or warning, and via Jeph Loeb and Joe Casey per DC Publisher Jeannette Kahn - a well-known secondary character is going to bite it. Mark Schultz (oft called 'the Scientist' by Loeb and Casey) was also involved in the panel discussions.

  • Though many characters were discussed, no specific names were revealed to be on tombstones quite yet, but an up-coming JLA issue will feature two funerals.

  • The focus of "OWAW" is what effect the war will have on Superman, the man who refuses to kill. What happens when you push even a super man far past his limits? Continuity was stressed, from healing time of broken bones in one title carrying over properly to the other titles, to the overall moral and ethical issues the stars will face, and how it will affect them. This includes the repercussions of the deaths (apparently there will be more than a few, and millions of civilians).

  • As many Superman fans are aware, the Superman writers and artists get together once a year with editor Eddie Berganza (who was also great on the panel) for a long weekend retreat (known as the Superman Summit) in which they plan the events of the next year in terms of major characters. The heat between Luthor and Bruce Wayne will escalate, Lois makes a discovery, and at the moment we have no idea whether Ma or Pa Kent are alive.

  • Upon the conclusion of "OWAW" the decision has been made to do the second half of the year focusing on "stand-alone" or one-issue stories. (Many fans want single stories, and it's getting crucial from a business sense to make comics more accessible to the general public.
