September 2, 2001: WizardWorld 2001 Report

Superman Homepage Reporter, Nick Newman (nnewman8283@yahoo.com) visited this year's WizardWorld Comic Con in Chicago, and has filed the following report for us, with some exciting news and audio files from the Con for your listening pleasure...

"While visiting WizardWorld 2001 in Chicago Illinois, I got a chance to see many of the creators, check out some preview prints of some upcoming issues, and talk with Jeph Loeb. I will warn you now; there will be spoilers, big and small, mixed throughout this report. If you don't want to know what is coming up in the next few months, then read no further.

Creators at the show included Jeph Loeb, Ed McGuinness, Joe Kelly, Joe Casey, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen. Most were present at a panel entitled, "Icons: The Big Three" that was centered on Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman and their iconic status in the DCU. It was very entertaining, and told small amounts of what we can expect in the coming months as well as giving the fans an insight into what the creators think of their own character. An audio recording of the hour-long panel is available for download. To help you through it, Jeph Loeb's voice is the loudest one you'll hear, Greg Rucka is the one you'll hear talking the most, Ed McGuinness talks about Superman's colors, and Joe Kelly and Casey throw some comments in there. It has been split into six RealAudio files for your download. Enjoy! (Links to the audio files are listed at the end of this article).

Superman #175 Right after the panel, I was able to walk with Jeph for a few minutes and talk to him about the future of the comics. While it was in no way a formal interview, I did learn that we can expect to see Krypto every now and then, similar to his silver-age appearances in their frequency. I also learned that Superman #175 (a "Joker: Last Laugh" tie-in issue) will only feature a very brief appearance of Doomsday. Jeph would also like to bring Gorilla Grodd on as a Superman villain. In the upcoming months, we can expect to see many more self-contained stories. I also asked Jeph what the inspiration behind Superman's impending costume change was, and was informed that it is not derived from anything (Kingdom Come for example) but is instead tied to the storyline. Clark will have a very clear reason for changing it.

While in the DC booth, I was able to take a peek at some of the September comics. The next issue of Superman has Clark rebuilding his parents' home with Lois and then are visited by Pete and Lana. Adventures has Superman saving a man, and apparently wearing the new costume, according to the black and white pages I saw. Man of Steel has Superman meeting with John Henry (once again wearing his old armor) as the two analyze the entropy aegis. I also got a chance to see JLA #61 (December release) which debuts the team of Kelly and Mahnke. I didn't read the story, but Mahnke's art was great, very similar to what we've seen but a little different in its style. The booth also had the Smallville trailer running (and Jeph said the show looks really good).

Of course, I also shopped around for some comics. This was the first year that I didn't need any Superman issues, so I paged through the bargain bins for JLA issues and ended up with a little over one hundred issues for about sixty dollars.

This year's show was a great time. If you have never been before, then I greatly suggest that you try to make it next year. You won't be sorry."

Nick Newman.

Audio Files: The following audio files are recordings of the "Icons: The Big Three" panel with the DC Comics creative teams on Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman titles. To listen to the files you need to have the RealAudio player installed on your computer.
