March 12, 2001: DC Prepares for the Big One

Over the last few months DC readers have been hearing little bits and pieces and the upcoming Superman and DC Universe storyline Our Worlds at War, but fandom has yet to get the full nuts and bolts details of the storyline, so we set out this week to try to track some down. And from what we've found out so far, the operative for this big summer event is, well... BIG.

Encompassing three full months (June-August) of the core Superman titles, a Secret Files and ten 48-page, stand-alone one-shots and various tie-ins to other monthly books over those three months, the storyline starts of course with the June Superman books. But that's getting ahead of ourselves. Best to start at the beginning...

"Like all stories of this magnitude, it could only be borne out of a Super Summit," explained Superman writer Jeph Loeb. "Going in we knew we wanted to tackle something that hadn't been done in a long while - a story of Crisis-type proportions that would affect not only the Super-books, but every book in the DCU - should they wish to participate. That is one of the gifts of having an editor like Eddie Berganza. His idea of a cross-company crossover is one where the books that choose to partake are welcome and those who don't, don't. But, make no mistake. The affects of this story will be felt for a long time one way or another throughout the DCU.

"This all began with a discussion about Pearl Harbor," the writer continued, setting the scene. "It will be the 60th anniversary of the attack which brought about America's involvement World War II. That led to an inspection of World War II. There were so many factions - Nazi Germany and the War in Europe. Japan and the Pacific Theater. FDR. Churchill. Stalin. Hitler. The Emperor of Japan. Millions of lives at stake. Countries that changed sides during the conflict. Entire cities destroyed.

"Pearl Harbor.
"The Atomic Bomb.
"The End of an Age of Innocence.
"Great Villains.
"Greater Heroes.
"Great Stories.

"Now ... we took all of that and applied it to a universe of heroes and "Our Worlds At War" began to take shape. We realized that once DC approved a country where Lex Luthor is President and a solar system where Pluto has been reconstructed as Warworld - well, just about anything goes. We started asking - does the DCU need a Florida? Peking? How about all of South America? These big stories are always touching the fabric of changing the face of the planet - but what happens when we really change the face of the planet?

"It has pathos, drama, death, sacrifice, and a challenge that may or may not change everything in existence. It has been hinted at for over a year in the Superman titles, but it is finally hereŠ

"IMPERIEX, once and for all."
