September 28, 2001: Duncan Rouleau Interview

Comixtreme's Dave Gallagher (of Heroic Images! Fame) recently had the opportunity to talk with Action Comics penciller and all-around 'Man of Action', Duncan Rouleau. Below is a short excerpt from that interview...

Q: How did you come to be a comic book penciller? Who gave you your 'big break' into the comics industry?

A: I was doing storyboards for a small film company called I.R.S. Media - I am responsible for such classics as Shakes the Clown (the Citizen Kane of alcoholic clown movies) and One False Move - when I ran into some guys from Continuity Studios (Neal Adams' company, for those not in the know). They told me to send over my portfolio. I put one together, and after review I was informed that I had no talent and would never get work in comics.

No, that's not what happened - I caught Bob Harras in a fish net and he granted me three wishes if I'd toss him back into his bathtub. I asked for a 'feather' to put in my cap, a pair of 'intellectual glasses' like Elvis Costello's, and a 'fill in' on Wolverine. I got all three and then was promptly arrested.

Actually, that's not entirely true; what really happened was this... I was forced into gladiatorial combat with WildStorm interns and slowly... bloodily... worked my way up to Editor-In-Chief Bill Kaplan. After beheading them all and gathering favor with the 'mob', I faced off with Caesar himself.

To tell the truth... I can't remember."

Q: What's it like being part of the Superman creative lineup?

A: What can one say about Superman? It's an honor. It's also difficult. There's so much history - he's such a part of America. My desire to bring something new coupled with the responsibility of tradition is daunting. I think that defining what part of 'tradition' I can contribute to is where my greatest work lies."
