Super Boy?

December 5, 2001: Superbaby?

Newsarama recently published a very interesting article speculating on the possibility of Clark Kent and Lois Lane having a baby in the Superman comics books. What follows is a short excerpt from the very detailed article...

Don't click away - humor us for a moment...

It's something that's been in the back of the minds of Superman readers since the wedding of Clark Kent and Lois Lane - when's the other shoe going to drop? Or better yet, when will the baby booties drop?

Will we ever see a Superbaby? If so, when?

And is there a better time than now?

Think about it - the marketplace, by many accounts, is in the early stages of a possible sustained upswing. Comics are certainly getting more 'mainstream' media attention like never before, from Ghost World, X-Men, and Spider-Man movies making waves to The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay winning the Pulitzer, the media push Marvel managed with Heroes, and this little Batman book hitting shops tomorrow, not to mention loads of high-profile projects coming up in 2002 - it looks as if comeback of sorts is more a possibility than ever.

Earlier this year Joe Quesada called Origin the greatest story Marvel Comics hadn't yet told... is the arrival of a bouncing Superbaby the biggest story comics has yet to tell? No doubt DC could orchestrate the pregnancy and birth in a way that would draw major media attention, possibly rivaling what was seen for 1991's the Death of Superman. The birth of Superman's child (and the issues leading up to it) would surely be sought after by the mainstream audience, possibly bringing new customers into comic shops in droves.

But just because they could, does that mean DC should?
