Supergirl #35

October 22, 2008: Sterling Gates Talks Supergirl

ProjectFanboy.com caught up with writer Sterling Gates to discuss his new gig as writer of "Supergirl". Here's a portion of the interview...

Q: In a serious case of art imitating life, this version of Supergirl has spent most of her career trying to define herself, while, in the real world, it seems that previous creative teams have been having the same problem. Story and plot lines aside, how do you, personally, define "Supergirl"?

STERLING: Supergirl is a hero, but she's a teenager first. I think people have trouble understanding her in that she's similar to Superman in concept, wearing the big red "S" and flying around fighting bad guys and stuff, but emotionally, she's a very, very different character.

For starters, she's an active immigrant to our planet, whereas Clark's a passive one. She was raised on Krypton, had a life there, and was brought to Earth as a teenager. Clark was raised on Earth for years and was then told that he was an alien. Those are two very different events, and so already the two of them are going to have very different reactions to things here on Earth.

For example, Superman is going to see a tiger and will spring to action to keep it contained and Supergirl is going to stop and study it a little bit, or be scared by it at first, because it's something she's never seen before. Then once she understands it, she'll do what needs to be done. She's actively learning about our world and our cultures as she goes, just as the reader is learning about her. I think it makes for a fun and different book, playing up some of the "fish out of water" elements of her story.

And my goal, honestly, is to make her as cool as other female teen adventure heroes that I like, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Kim Possible or Chance Falconer (from James Robinson's LEAVE IT TO CHANCE).
