Brave and Bold

March 4, 2008: Jerry Ordway Talks Brave and Bold

Comicon.com spoke with artist Jerry Ordway about his work on DC's team-up series "The Brave and Bold", particularly about issue #11 (available in stores later this month) which involves Superman, Ultraman and Mr Mxyzptlk. Here's a portion of the interview...

Q: There have been a few different versions of Ultraman since the Silver Age, how did you decide how he should look and his distinctive features for your version of the character?

ORDWAY: Well, Ultraman as I last drew (or inked) him, in around 1982, had a costume that looked like he was wearing a big box as a shirt, whereas the current version is a bit sleeker, thank goodness. I followed current continuity, like a good artist should :)

THE PULSE: Ditto for Mr. Mxyzptlk ... what influenced how you saw him artistically and portrayed him in these pages?

ORDWAY: Well, in the script, Mark describes this as the Myxyzptlk of Ultraman's world, so he's a bit more dapper, and in a way less comical than I'm used to. Mark has a good "hook" for him as well, in the story.

THE PULSE: As a longtime comic book fan, what have been some of your favorite Mr. Mxyzptlk tales from the past?

ORDWAY: I liked what John Byrne did with him in Superman, and I also liked the way I wrote him, in Superman #50, as a prototype for the Impossible Man.
