June 9, 2008: Kurt Busiek Interview About "Trinity"

IGN.com has an interview with Kurt Busiek, the principal writer of "Trinity". Busiek explains where "Trinity" fits into current continuity, and how it is different from the two previous weekly series, "52" and "Countdown to Final Crisis". Busiek also discusses what makes Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman into a trinity:

The question of what they are to each other is most key. So the question is, how do Superman and Wonder Woman interact? How do Batman and Wonder Woman interact? How do Batman and Superman interact? What makes the three of them a trinity? Superman is a science fiction hero; Wonder Woman is a mythological hero; Batman is a crime hero. That's a kind of trinity. Superman is powered by the sun; Batman acts under the moon; Wonder Woman is made of mystical earth. That's a kind of Trinity. One of them is the man of tomorrow; one of them is built on the myths of the past; one of them is humanity of today. There's just trinity after trinity after trinity that you can shave off these characters, that you can find in them. And it turns out that that's very important to the story. Because traditionally in DC Comics, what trinity means is: there's three of them! [laughs]

In this case, the fact that they are a trinity, the fact that they work as a threefold connected unit gives them a kind of metaphysical power that fits into how the universe works, how the patterns of the metaphysical power run through everything. One point what we say is the keystone of the Multiverse is this universe, and the keystone of this universe is this earth, and the keystone of earth is these three characters. Or at least for certain approaches to power it can be treated that way.

So there is mystic/metaphysical important stuff you can do based on the fact that they are a trinity. And the villains of the piece are focused on their iconic and symbolic metaphysical power as a trinity, and how to break them as a trinity, how to usurp that power and use it consciously as opposed to just fulfilling the role. Which is what Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman have been doing over the years. The villains want to take over and actually take the reins of the universe because they are in this position.
