JLA Classified #52

January 22, 2008: Roger Stern Talks “JLA Classified”

Having interviewed artist John Byrne about his run on "JLA Classified", Comicon.com's The Pulse sat down with writer Roger Stern to get his take on what he has in store for the Justice League...

Q: When is your JLA CLASSIFIED story set?

ROGER STERN: It's actually set in two time periods. The story starts in issue #50, with our mystery villain showing up at the League's lunar Watchtower, sometime before the IDENTITY CRISIS story. And then, in issue #51, we jump back in time to see an earlier version of that villain taking on a younger generation of the JLA. The "past" of our story is set in a time when the League still operated out of their Secret Sanctuary outside Happy Harbor, Rhode Island. (Green Arrow shows up sporting a beard and moustache for the first time, so it's just a month or so before the JLA moved to their satellite headquarters.)

Q: Why did you set the story at those particular points in time?

ROGER STERN: Well, this is a big, generational sort of story, so we picked times when we had a good idea of who was in the League and how they were relating to each other. Plus, this gave John an opportunity to draw a JLA where Barry Allen is the Flash and Hal Jordan is Green Lantern.
