Superman: Secret Origins #1

December 14, 2008: Matt Idelson Talks Superman Comics in 2009

IGN.com has conducted an interview with Superman comics editor Matt Idelson to ask him all about the changes in the Superman books in 2009. Here's a portion of the interview...

Q: What makes this story the definitive origin story, other than the fact that it's the latest Superman origin story to claim as much? In other words, how can you convince readers that you're serious this time - that this really is the new canonical origin story?

Idelson: I hear what you're saying - it's like "If you only buy one comic this year, make it this oneŠ no, really!" Geoff, along with James, and Kurt before James, have put a great deal of thought and effort into weaving the various versions of Superman's history together, trying to make a nice, single narrative that pleases as many people as possible (like integrating the three different looks of the Kryptonians into the "New Krypton" story).

Geoff and Gary are doing the same thing here, honoring while clarifying the past, and clearing up some things for the present and the future. And they're coming up with some truly wonderful moments along the way - wait until you see the story behind the first ever picture of Superman! I love that scene!

Q: I understand you probably can't say much about these series until New Krypton wraps, but what made Greg Rucka and Andrew Kriesberg the right choices to helm Action Comics and Superman: World of New Krytpon, respectively?

Idelson: The "flavor" of the stories in Action is really interesting, and kind of different from what you've seen in the book prior, and without getting into specifics, Greg seemed really suited for telling them. It's almost like the book was created for him. I've loved everything Andrew's written, his take on the different DC characters and the situations he's put them in - just very, very fresh writing. With the way things settled out for Superman's world of books post-"New Krypton," I thought being able to work with him in the one book Superman will be appearing in, in an environment that's very, very new to the character was the only way to go.

Thanks to Mike Hasse for the lead on this interview.
