Trinity #1

April 10, 2008: Kurt Busiek Talks About “Trinity”

Newsarama.com sat down with writer Kurt Busiek to ask him all about his new weekly comic book "Trinity". Here's an excerpt from the interview asking Kurt what we can expect from Superman in "Trinity"...

Q: All right; from plot to character. Clearly, you've spent the most time with Superman in the past couple of years. Can you speak to "the state of Superman" at this moment? If a reader has never really read Superman before, what essentials of Superman's present worldview would that reader need to know?

KB: Nothing, really. We're expecting that readers will know the basics -- rocketed from doomed planet, raised by kindly Kansas farm folk, great metropolitan newspaper and such, but even that gets introduced along the way, for those rare few readers who've never seen Superman before. There's a lot in the opening act about who these guys are, to their world and to each other, so new readers will be caught up on all they need to know...but longtime readers may get a few angles that they haven't considered before, as well.

In the end, Trinity's going to be a book that can be appreciated on its own. You don't need a graduate degree in continuity to get into it, but by the time you're done, you'll likely know things about the DC Big Three that haven't really come up before.

As for Superman, he's the guy Geoff and I have been writing -- strong, confident, assured, determined. But we won't be, say, getting into his status with the Legion of Super-Heroes or seeing Chris Kent...it's not that kind of a story. We will be seeing the classic cast, including Lois, Perry and Supergirl, but the story's more about Superman in connection with Batman and Wonder Woman, and who he is in that context. For each of them, it's something of a hybrid between a solo adventure and a team mission -- so you'll see more of their supporting casts than you do in JLA, but not to the extent that you see them in their home books.
