Alter Ego #56

March 12, 2008: Jerry Siegel - A Look Back in Time

During the mid-1970s, the plight of Superman's creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster became public news. They were interviewed on TV, radio and for newspaper articles about their struggle to be recognized and properly compensated for their creation.

In 1975 Murray Bishoff and Alan Light (founder of Comics Buyer's Guide) interviewed Jerry Siegel at the San Diego Comic Convention. Soon after Jerry wrote two letters to Alan Light in December 1975 and January 1976. Both these letters are posted below.

The 1975 San Diego Comic Convention interview with Jerry Siegel was recorded and the unedited recording runs 47 minutes. It was transcribed and published in Alter Ego #56 (February 2006). We're working to bring you the complete 47 minute audio interview later this month.

Also posted below are two photographs from the 1976 San Diego Comic Convention. The first shows Jerry Siegel (left) with animator Robert "Bob" Clampett (Beany and Cecil), while the other shows Jerry with wife Joanne (Joe Shuster's original model for Lois Lane) and daughter Laura.

Thanks to Alan Light for making these available to the Superman Homepage.
