All Star Superman #12

September 18, 2008: All Star Supermen - Frank Quitely and Grant Morrison

Newsarama.com spoke with artist Frank Quitely about "All Star Superman" now that the 12-issue series has come to a conclusion. Here's a portion of the interview...

Q: What is the characteristic that you think is most important, and overlooked in capturing the original superhero?

FQ: Gentleness, maybe. He's like the perfect dad! Imagine being omnipotent and enlightened - that's an attractive combination.

Q: There were so many aspects of this book that clicked so well with readers. From the Siegel and Shuster moment of #10, Zibarro, and the Sun Eater- really every issue packed something original and unique. Was there a favorite, far-out image of this series? What image or issue challenged you the most?

FQ: There are too many far-out images to pick only one, but the most challenging was probably the bottle city of Kandor, the description of which was about 5 pages long.

Not to be outdone, ComicBookResources.com also has an article about Quitely and his run on this series...

Quitely's primary goal was not dissimilar from that of the All Star line's stated purpose: make Superman accessible and as excellent as possible. "From the start, and for me that's the discussions I had with Grant before even starting the character sketches, what I was hoping to achieve [with 'All Star Superman'] was what I aim to achieve on every project I start, whether it's a short, or a mini, or something as long as this, and that's to tell the story I'm given in a way that's easy to follow and visually interesting, so that it works well for the reader. Now that it's finished and I've seen the story as a whole, I hope I've accomplished the task of helping to tell the best Superman story that I've read. I feel even more lucky to have been involved with this now than I did at the start."

While Grant Morrison tells WizardUniverse.com what his favorite Man of Steel moments and stories from the Last Son's long history are.
