Final Crisis #3

September 2, 2008: Grant Morrison DC Universe Interview

IGN Comics recently spoke with Grant Morrison about his plans for the DC Universe. He discusses killing Batman, "Final Crisis" and Supergirl. Here's an excerpt from the 6-page interview...

Q: Crisis on Infinite Earths famously did away with [Supergirl] because they were afraid she made Superman less special. How do you think the character adds to the DCU?

Morrison: She just provides a different take on the notion of Superman. I think people have become interested again in the idea of alternative versions of characters. There's been a lot of that in the last few years. It happened before in the fifties and again in the 90s, you know, where there was Batman and Robin, and then Batman had a whole family of Batwomen and Batgirls, and dogs, and all that stuff.

I think there comes a time when people get really interested in a character, and they start to break the character apart to examine how it works, and that's when you get the female version, and you get the bad version or the future version. And a lot of that's what we've been exploring in Batman RIP, the different 'takes' on Batman and the way that sometimes Batman works best as a loner, and sometimes he works best as a guy with an extended family.

I've notice the same thing going with All Star Superman as well. People seem quite interested in the various alternate Supermen and future Supermen, because they all cast a different light on the character, and allow you to get the measure of him.
