Superman Confidential #12

February 6, 2008: Phil Hester Talks “Superman Confidential”

Artist Phil Hester sat down with Comicon's The Pulse to share his thoughts on "Superman Confidential". Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: What elements of Superman do you find the most heroic and ideal?

PHIL HESTER: He's good. I mean, some readers may see it as hokey or old-fashioned, but the consistency of his moral excellence is usually reserved for religious icons. Thing is, you know he'd do the right thing even if he weren't invulnerable. The Boy Scout tag has been put on him in an almost derisive way, but I think it's a positive thing. In times like these it's good to know that someone's out there as a constant beacon of not only justice, but kindness and mercy. He's the good guy.

Q: How do you incorporate your vision of the character into the artwork you create for each of these three issues?

HESTER: I never want him to look vindictive. He can looked pissed off or troubled, but never cruel. I want his emotions to project on a grand scale, like Hellenistic statues of ancient gods. Even his moods should seem super powered.

The first part of Hester's work on the 3-part "Superman Confidential" story is available this month in issue #12 (scheduled to be released on February 20).
