April 3, 2009: Beverly Washburn Coming to Metropolis Superman Celebration

Known to many as "television's first child star", Beverly Washburn, will make her way to Metropolis, Illinois to be a special guest at the Superman Celebration in June.

As a child, Washburn appeared in the 1951 theatrical movie, Superman and The Mole Men, which was subsequently edited into two half-hour segments. These became the first two episodes of TV's Adventures of Superman starring George Reeves and Phyllis Coates. George Reeves later played Washburn's father in the movie, Heart of Gold.

Washburn has had many notable roles in movies such as Old Yellar, Here Comes The Bride with Bing Crosby and The Greatest Show on Earth. In the movie Hans Christian Anderson, Danny Kaye sang the song, Thumbelina, to her. She also appeared in 1953 on Dragnet and on the original series Star-Trek episode The Deadly Years.

Not limited to television and movie roles, Washburn has also performed comedy on stage in Las Vegas with Jack Benny, and her 1962 recording Everybody Loves Saturday Night made the national record charts.

Beverly Washburn will be available to greet fans from 10 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 12-13 at the Artist Alley located in the heart of the festival on Market Street. A special tribute to George Reeves will take place on Saturday evening, June 13 with Washburn introducing the uncut version of the movie "Superman and The Mole Men".
