Siegel House

July 15, 2009: Jerry Siegel's Home Restored

Part of this past weekend's Cleveland Super-Con celebration was the unveiling of the newly restored home where Jerry Siegel lived when he dreamt up Superman. Laura Siegel Larson, Jerry's daughter, personally contacted the Superman Homepage with the following details of the ribbon cutting ceremony at 10622 Kimberly Avenue...

My mom, sons and I just returned from the ribbon cutting at my dad's house, the panel, and other festivities in Cleveland. What an action packed, heart warming weekend! It was a dream come true. I just wish my dad could have been there to experience the outpouring of love from so many wonderful people.

In addition to recognition for Jerry and Joe, Joanne Carter Siegel (Jerry's widow) received multiple honors including a Proclamation from the Cleveland City Council for: "...your artistic and inspirational influence as the original model for the character Lois Lane. As the widow of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, you tirelessly carried on his legacy as one of the originators of a timeless champion of the people, who stood for truth, justice and the 'American Way.' This Council applauds your exemplary efforts and extends best wishes to you for much continued happiness and success in the future."

"She was deeply moved by the presentation of a framed copy of the ad she placed in the Cleveland Plain Dealer in the 1930s seeking work as a model - the very ad that lead Joe Shuster to hire her to pose for Lois Lane.", explained Laura. "The ad was located through tireless detective work by Superman historian Brad Ricca."

Joanne and Laura Siegel Joanne Siegel also received a plaque from the people of Cleveland and the Siegel and Shuster Society that reads:

"To Joanne Carter Siegel the one true inspriation for the timeless literary character Lois Lane, who serves as a continuing role model for young women everywhere. This award also recognizes the tireless efforts to promote American Popular culture and preserve the legacy of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators or Superman." A reproduction of one of Joe Shuster's famous sketches of Joanne is on the plaque.

The Siegel and Shuster Society also presented Joanne Siegel with "Super Brick" #1, an actual original brick from the house that was removed during the renovations.
