July 8, 2009: Superman's Creators Honored at Landmark Cleveland Events

As we've been reporting for some time now, Cleveland, Ohio will be honoring two of its favorite sons, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster this month with a number of special events to tie in with the Sceaming Tiki Cleveland Super Con. Below are details about those special events...

Jerry Siegel's widow and daughter to make a rare appearance at the ribbon-cutting of the newly restored family home. Event is part of a three-day convention July 10-12 featuring famous actors, writers and artists celebrating Superman's Cleveland origins.

The highlight of the weekend is a series of special events that will honor the memory of Superman's creators, Cleveland natives Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the two Glenville teenagers who created Superman in the mid 1930s. A third Cleveland native, model Joanne Siegel, who posed for artist Joe Shuster when he first drew the image of Lois Lane, and who later married Superman writer-creator Jerry Siegel, will attend the ceremonies and will also be honored.

Ribbon-cutting Ceremony at Jerry Siegel's Restored Childhood Home:

On the morning of Saturday, July 11, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's family members will host a public ribbon-cutting ceremony at the house at 16022 Kimberly Ave. in Glenville where Siegel grew up. It was at this spot where the teenage Siegel first conceived of and developed the Superman character. Free parking will be available.

The privately owned home has just completed a yearlong $100,000 restoration project with funds raised through an international comic book art auction planned by the Siegel and Shuster Society and best-selling author Brad Meltzer (Book of Lies, and www.ordinarypeoplechange theworld.com). It is hoped that people who visit the site will be inspired to follow their dreams just as Jerry Siegel did when he created the American icon that is loved by millions around the world.

Kimberly Ave. will receive a commemorative street sign designating it as "Jerry Siegel Lane" and nearby Amor Avenue, where Joe Shuster grew up, will be named "Joe Shuster Lane." The adjoining Parkwood Ave. will be termed "Lois Lane" in honor of Siegel's wife Joanne, the original model for the intrepid girl reporter.

New public art fences will be unveiled at the Siegel home as well as at the site of Joe Shuster's former apartment building at the corner of Amor and Parkwood. These visually stunning fences honoring Superman and the creators have been designed and built by local artists.

Superman Trolley Tour:

Lolly the Trolley will become a rocket from Krypton, ferrying guests on a tour of historical Superman sites on Saturday from 1:30 - 5:00 and Sunday from 10:00 - 4:00 p.m. Led by local historian Nate Arnold, these hour-and-a-half long tours will include little known locations that played a role in the Siegel/Shuster/Superman story. The tour will originate from the Tiki-Con and cost $10. Tickets may be purchased at the convention at the Siegel and Shuster Society booth. Tours begin outside the Halle Building on Euclid Avenue.

Historic Superman Panel and Film:

Last Son, a documentary film about Superman's origins by Brad Ricca, will show at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, in the historic Hanna Theater. Following the film, members of the Siegel and Shuster families, including Jerry Siegel's widow, Joanne Siegel, and their daughter, Laura Siegel Larson, will talk to visitors about their memories of Jerry, Joe and Superman. This will be an open-question format narrated by Cleveland media personalities Mike Olszewski and Mike San Giacomo.

Joe Shuster Birthday Celebration and Cake Cutting:

On Friday, July 10, which would have been artist-creator Joe Shuster's 95th birthday, a giant cake will be displayed and cut. The event, open to the public, will be at a yet to be determined location.

The Sceaming Tiki Cleveland Super Con will take place on Friday July 10 to Sunday July 12 at the Halle Building in Cleveland, Ohio.

The first major comic book convention in Cleveland since 1981. Edward James Olmos, Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor on Smallville) and Sam Witwer (Davis Bloome on Smallville), Helen Slater (Supergirl) and Ray Park (Darth Maul) will appear.
