April Fools Day!

April 1, 2009: Superman Homepage Pranks for April Fools Day 2009

If you didn't visit the site between midnight and midday (EST) April 1st, then you missed out on the four April Fools Day pranks we played on our unsuspecting readership.

Here they are below...

Central Park Statue

April 1, 2009: Superman Statue in Central Park

As a gesture of goodwill and a commitment to pragmatism, the city of New York has unveiled a new statue that features the Man of Steel, standing right in the heart of Central Park!

The piece, crafted by Sinuoy Eve Tsu, a famous craftsman from the pacific region, reflects a bronze sensibility at first glance, but in its heart the piece is all Steel.

"I wanted to create something people would really notice, in a place that's historically known for some of its tragic elements. It is my hope that some errant mugger might see this, and perhaps rethink their actions. I don't know. Perhaps buy their potential victims an Italian Ice!"

Barack Obama

April 1, 2009: Obama to Re-Appear in "New Krypton"

Many fans were shocked, and some were even upset to see President Obama appear in Final Crisis #7, leading to a heated dialogue and some extraordinary controversy here on the Superman Homepage.

DC Comics, hoping to capitalize on this momentum, has indicated that the Obama from an alternate Earth will appear in the currently running "New Krypton" storyline's culmination as an exile from his own universe where, in a startling turn, a bald Hillary Clinton is elected president.

In a recent interview Dan DiDio, executive editor, had this to say, "I know it's risky, but really, when it comes down to it, he's in the news. That's just the facts. We couldn't pass up the opportunity to say, 'Hey, how would our president react, if he had superpowers, to a potential war between Earth and Krypton?' I mean, could you? I personally would love to see the president spit fire from his eyes [laughter]!"

Responding to complaints of Obama event fatigue, Grant Morrison, the character's creator, responded, "Oy, mate. Come on. It's just a comic book. If you don't get it, it's your fault."

Smallville Season 8 Poster

April 1, 2009: Welling Backs Out of "Smallville" Season 9

A press release sent out by The CW today reveals that, at the last second, Tom Welling has backed out of his contract negotiations and neglected to be part of the confirmed 9th season of Smallville. Though his participation was previously considered all but certain, it seems that a legal loophole, coupled with Tom's desire to take two episodes off in the final season being denied, led to a quarrel that ultimately broke down the process.

The Superman Homepage contacted executive producer Darren Swimmer, who had this to say: "Things are still mostly in the air, but we're considering bringing back Kara as a stop-gap measure. We're confirmed for eight episodes without Tom, but to be honest, we're not sure what we'll do without him. It's a complete blow. And we were going to put him in the suit, too."

Swimmer also hinted strongly that the Justice League may play a part in the show without Clark, only this time, led by... you guessed it. Lana Lang. When we last saw her, she had Clark's powers, and thereby would serve as a fitting proxy.

"We're in negotiations," Darren continued, "It's a matter of time. With the dismal showing of the Chun-Li movie, her people are now making overtures. We'll see."

Jason White

April 1, 2009: Superman Movie Titled "Men of Steel"

The Superman Homepage has learned, via a confidential source, that the next Superman film is now a go, and may even be fast tracked pending script review.

Our source on the inside, who insisted on confidentiality, indicated that Routh will still be in place as Superman, and no changes will be made to the costume. Singer is out as director (he'll produce), but the director's chair will be filled, in a surprise move, by Mark Millar, of "Wanted" fame. The movie, tentatively titled "Men of Steel" (emphasis added), focuses on the subject's new, controversial subject matter.

The film, which will be the first of a trilogy, will actually see Lois depart for a period of time to Gotham, and bring Lana in to fill her role, much as Superman III did. In the ten years since Superman left Smallville, he has left behind yet another son, "Ricky," with his old flame Lana. The child, who Superman again sired without knowing he had done so, will undoubtedly cause trouble with his other son Jason, who is along with Clark for the ride in Lois' absence.

"Picture 'Jersey Girl' meets 'Hancock'..." the source said. "...only with an angry god."

A sheepish Bryan Singer, caught by our own Jeffrey Bridges in Los Angeles last night at a restaurant, said, in a guarded response to questions about the film, we quote: "Well, everyone loves bastards. We need more of them."

Too true! For the full story click "Read More" below.
