Hidden Gems

May 2, 2009: Superman Homepage Hidden Gems

By Barry Freiman

Welcome to the second month of the newest Superman Homepage column we call Superman Homepage Hidden Gems. Each month, this column will try to reacquaint you with or introduce you for the first time to the Superman Homepage's vast archives of articles, interviews, and lots more.

This monthly feature will point you to an article from the site's vast archives. It could be an interview, a feature, or even an episode guide. The column will also link to an archived comic book review from the past. Finally, there will be a link to some other non-written item contained in the site - whether it's a graphic, a video, an audio file, a wallpaper, or some other of our huge archive of non-written materials.

This month let's go retro with the Super Friends. This past year, Steve and I put a lot of work into updating and correcting the site's archive of Super Friends episode listings. The most recent two sets of Super Friends DVDs included 15 of 16 episodes of "The All New Super Friends Hour". Curiously, the four-story sixteenth episode is not included on either DVD.

Earlier this week, Warners announced the August 2009 release of "Super Friends - The Lost Episodes". This set includes the 1983 Super Friends shorts (listed at the bottom of this page), many of which hadn't ever been shown in the United States until the show was syndicated on the USA Network a decade or so ago. For those of you keeping score at home, that leaves the remainder of episodes listed on that same page as not yet available on DVD. Also not yet on DVD are the very first 16 "Super Friends" episodes, the ones with Wendy, Marvin, and Wonder Dog.

Oh and while you're checking out our Super Friends episode guides, be sure to take note that we've got episode guides for many other Superman related live action and animated properties.

This month's spotlight review is former SH writer Wallace Harrington's review of Superman (1st vol.) #162 with the 1960 story "Superman's Return to Krypton". The "New Krypton" storyline in current comics surely borrows from stories like this. Check out the review here.

Finally, this month's special feature is for the kids or the kid in you. The Superman Homepage has 19 printable coloring book style pages. Break out the crayons.

Hopefully, this column will be a springboard for many of you to continue to check out the many features of the Superman Homepage in addition to our main news page. See you next month.
