Hidden Gems

April 2, 2009: Superman Homepage Hidden Gems

By Barry Freiman

Welcome to a new recurring feature on the site. Many people read the Superman Homepage main news page and that's it. That's great - if it has anything to do with Superman currently, you'll see it on the main news page. But many of you may not be aware the Superman Homepage has feature articles, interviews, reviews, media files, and graphic files, among the many treasures to be found on the site.

Every month, this "Hidden Gems" feature will point you to an article from the site's vast archives. It could be an interview, a feature, or even an episode guide. The column will also include a link to an archived comic book review from the past. Finally, there will be a link to some other non-written item contained in the site - whether it's a graphic, a video, an audio file, a wallpaper, or some other of our huge archive of non-written materials.

This month, let's start with one of the site's earliest Superman celebrity interviews. On December 15, 1999, the Superman Homepage interviewed DC Comics writer Grant Morrison. At the time, Morrison was ending his run on Justice League of America. In the interview, Morrison discusses story ideas that appear to have led directly to plot points in All-Star Superman and Final Crisis. Check out the 1999 interview with Grant Morrison here.

This month's spotlight review is Superman Homepage writer Nick Newman's 2005 review of Countdown to Infinite Crisis, the special issue in which Max Lord shot the Blue Beetle. This not only set the Infinite Crisis in motion, but it also set up the "Sacrifice" storyline where Wonder Woman took life into her own hands to save a mentally-controlled Superman. Check out the 2005 review of Countdown to Infinite Crisis here.

Finally this month's special feature highlight will help you maintain written communications with your friends on the world of New Krypton. The Superman Homepage has a variety of Fonts in both Windows and Mac formats that you can download to your computer. There are Kryptonian language Fonts from "Superman: The Animated Series", "Smallville", and the comic books. There is also a file of Dingbat Fonts (images rather than letters) featuring Superman related images from comics, TV, and film.

Hopefully, this column will be a springboard for many of you to continue to check out the many features of the Superman Homepage in addition to our main news page. See you next month.
