Dragon*Con

September 16, 2009: Dragon*Con 2009 Report

by Mike Kelly

Dragon Con may not be a big source for Superman news, but it is an occasion to celebrate him and his universe (and many others besides). Here are a few shots I managed to grab of those who were there to do so... when I was fast enough, that is. In the parade, Superman and the Flash broke into a foot race right after I snapped them.

And I know the General Lee is a stretch, but when John Schneider's there, can it be far behind? (Actually it ran ahead of him.)

As I said, not much in the way of news. However, at Sunday's Smallville panel, I was privileged to watch a minor clash between the forces of darkness and light in the persons of James Marsters and Helen Slater, respectively. (John Schneider and Alessandro Juliani were also at the table.) Ms. Slater, currently pursuing an anthropology degree, had clearly been giving some thought to superheroes and how to keep them fresh, and she encouraged people to read books like The Power Of Myth by Joseph Campbell. But I doubt Marsters' ideas for a TV series - about a Supergirl raised by an "abusive alcoholic" who takes over for a shriveled-up Superman in 2330 - were what she had in mind.

Later, asked how he prepared for villainous roles, Marsters credited waking up in the morning hating everyone and everything. But when he leaned in to Ms. Slater and said, "You know what I'm talkin' about," she replied most emphatically, "No I don't!"

All in the spirit of banter, of course. But personally, I prefer her world to his.

Stay in school, kids.
