May 7, 2009: Gail Simone and Mike Norton at Superman Celebration

Comic writer Gail Simone and artist Mike Norton to appear at Superman Celebration in Metropolis, Illinois.

Artists and writers who create superheroes and tell of their adventures are always one of the highlights of the Metropolis Superman Celebration. And this year, fans will have the opportunity to meet several of these talented individuals during the four-day event June 11-14 in Metropolis, Illinois.

Gail Simone will be the featured writer during the 31st annual Superman Celebration. Simone is a multiple award-winning writer of comics, video games, and animation. She has had critically-acclaimed runs writing Superman, Justice League, Simpsons Comics, Birds of Prey, Secret Six and many other titles, including her current character-defining run on the monthly Wonder Woman title.

Simone has also written for animation for the Justice League Unlimited series and Tomb Raider, and she shares a writing credit for the recent animated Wonder Woman movie. She is currently working on several film and video game projects as well as continuing her popular work in comics. She lives with her husband, son, and two dogs in a small town on the Oregon coast.

Comic Celebrities

Mike Norton is this year's featured artist. Norton has made a name for himself working on books like Queen and Country, Gravity, Runaways, Teen Titans, Go!, All-New Atom, Metamorpho and Countdown. Norton is a regular artist on Green Arrow/Black Canary and will be finishing up Trinity this year which is DC's new weekly series and features the characters Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. He will be doing Blue Beetle features for the Booster Gold series at DC soon.

Other special guests scheduled to appear at the Superman Celebration are John Ostrander and Josh Elder.

Originally an actor in a Chicago, Illinois theatre company, John Ostrander moved into writing comics in 1983. His first scripts for DC Comics were published in 1986. He wrote for The Spectre, a DC Comics series about the manifestation of the wrath of God. Other DC stories for Ostrander include Firestorm, Justice League, Martian Manhunter, Manhunter, Suicide Squad, and Wasteland. At Marvel Comics, Ostrander has also worked on X-Men, Bishop, Quicksilver, Heroes for Hire and the Punisher.

His work has won him a good deal of recognition in the comics field, including nominations for the Comics Buyer's Guide Award for favorite writer in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. In December 2006, DC Comics published a new Batman story-arc titled 'Grotesk' written by Ostrander that ran through Batman issues 659-662.

Josh Elder is the creator of the Mail Order Ninjah graphic novel series and nationally sydicated comic strip as well as being a writer for DC Comics' The Batman Strikes and the Star Craft graphic novel line. Elder's works also include the romantic comedy graphic novel Love Bytes for Platinum Studios. He has also worked as an associate editor at the comic-centric magazine Wizard and currently writes graphic novel reviews for the Chicago Sun-Times. He also gives lectures on comics at schools and libraries across the country. Elder lives in the small, Midwestern town of Chicago, Illinois and can be found online at www.joshelder.com.

Artists and writers will take part in a question and answer session at the Artist Alley which is open to the general public free of charge.

Members of the Mid-South Cartoonist Association will run the programing at the popular Artist Alley & Writers Way. Hands-on workshops, discussion panels, mini-seminars, and question and answer sessions will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The annual Artist Alley Fanfilm Competition will be run by Tim Brown of Inked Monkey Productions.

Members of the Mid-South Cartoonist Association include: Lin Workman - Bushi Tales; Kevin Williams with Muley the Mule Puppet; Antone Wade and Janet Wade - Jetta: Tales of the Toshingawa; Andrew Chandler - Moth & Ethan and Horatio the Half-Hoofed Horse; Adam Shaw - Bloodstream and Dead in Memphis; and Jay Chuppe - The Red Mullet.
