No S for Superman

April 1, 2010: Judge Rules No "S" in Superman Movie

The latest fallout from the on-going legal battle between DC Comics and the Siegel family over the rights to Superman has seen Judge Stephen Larson rule that the up-coming Superman movie cannot feature the famous "S" symbol whatsoever.

The first Superman story was published in 1938 in Action Comics No. 1. For $130, Jerry Siegel and co-creator Joel Shuster signed a release in favor of DC's predecessor, Detective Comics, and a 1974 court decision ruled they signed away their copyrights forever.

In 2008, the same court order ruled on summary judgment that the Siegels had successfully recaptured (as of 1999) Siegel's copyright in Action Comics No. 1, giving them rights to the Superman character, including his costume, his alter-ego as reporter Clark Kent, the feisty reporter Lois Lane, their jobs at the Daily Planet newspaper working for a gruff editor, and the love triangle among Clark/Superman and Lois.

This latest ruling means that Warner Bros. will not only be unable to promote the film with the "S" symbol on posters and billboards, but the character himself will have to wear his famous blue and red costume minus the "S" shield across his chest.

The Blur

April 1, 2010: Name Change for "The Blur" in "Smallville" Season 10

Variety reports that an edict from within DC Entertainment has been sent out to the Executive Producers of "Smallville", requesting that "The Blur" (as Clark Kent's superhero identity has become known in the TV series) must be known as "Super Blur" in Season 10.

"We felt that the character continually being referred to as simply 'The Blur' was detrimental to the character's reputation moving forward," explained Diane Nelson, head of DC Entertainment. "It has been decided that a further bridging between his current nom de plume and the name the whole world will know him as, 'Superman', was well beyond due."

Just how this new naming will be written into the show has not yet been revealed, but it is expected that Lois Lane will no doubt be involved in the name change.

New Power

April 1, 2010: Comic Book Superman Gains New Superpower

J. Michael Straczynski has revealed that his run on "Superman" will involve an all-new permanent superpower.

Superman Homepage member Harold Ekaf ran into J. Michael Staczynski at this local comic shop in L.A., where the writer revealed that his story appearing in up-coming issues of "Superman" will entail a whole new power set. "He refused to explain what it might be, but assured that Superman's outdated powers will be completely replaced and even his personality will change in favor of a new, grittier Superman for the new decade.", explained Harold.

We chased up Matt Idelson for a confirmation on this, and he told us, "Times are changing and we need to change with them. The old Superman will be gone and there's a new bad boy in town. It's exciting."

Will Superman revert to his Electric Blue phase? Will he create lasers from his fingers like in Superman II?

DC's July solicitations mention a meeting between Superman and Poison Ivy in Gotham City Sirens #14, indicating that Superman's new power will have to do with Photosynthesis, specifically how Superman can harness the Sun's rays the same way plants do.
