August 12, 2010: Late Superman Fan Honored in Metropolis

Mark Andersen The Kenosha News has an article about late Superman fan William Andersen who died at the age of 20 a year ago and the boy's special relationship with the City of Metropolis, Illinois:

Mark Andersen, William's father, said the family had moved into the Kenosha area from Georgia about 12 years ago. The trips from Kenosha to Georgia and back often landed the family in Metropolis, Ill., the small city in southern Illinois that has been designated "Hometown of Superman" and hosts the Superman Celebration. It was a trip that always delighted William.

"We have pictures from when he was two years old in his Superman pajamas," Mark Andersen said. "Superman was his number one."

William died last June at the age of 20. This year the Superman Celebration was held from June 10-14, just about a year since William's death. Mark said there was never any doubt that the family, from Kenosha and Georgia, would still be making the trip to Metropolis. But they also made sure William would be the focal point of their trip.

"We had to do that," Mark said. "It was in his memory and we knew quite a bit of people come there."

William's family bought a brick in his memory that sits in front of the base of a Lois Lane statue that was unveiled at this year's Superman Celebration.

They also brought a picture that William had drawn of the cast of "Smallville," the television show about the younger years of Superman/Clark Kent. The Andersen family had contacted the Superman museum in Metropolis and asked if they could donate William's drawing. The picture was on display at the city's Chamber of Commerce during this year's Superman Celebration.
