Superman: Strength

October 19, 2004: Scott McCloud Talks “Superman: Strength”

The Pulse caught up with Scott McCloud to discuss with him his up-coming 3-part prestige format miniseries "Superman: Strength", which will debut in January 2005. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

The story is drawn by Aluir Amancio, who also worked on Superman Adventures like McCloud. Also a part of the team is inker Terry Austin, colorist Trish Mulvihill, and letterer Todd Klein. The story features a new villain McCloud created nicknamed "Fido," who may just be one of the craftiest people the Man of Steel ever has to face.

"Superman: Strength is my take on the character of Superman and what makes him tick," began McCloud. "It's a little bit about his childhood and the philosophy he grew up with. Also how that philosophy contrasts with the philosophy of the villain of the piece."

McCloud elaborated, "Superman is a creature of the Golden Rule. It's one of the reasons why so many artists want to draw Batman graphic novels or work on the monthly comics, because you know there's a certain amount of rage they have at the world they get to convey through the pages. Superman, despite the tragedies he's faced, is a man without much rage or hatred for people. So he doesn't necessarily play into the adolescent power fantasy as other heroes do. He's the adult superhero."

"The villain is a character I created who goes by the nickname 'Fido,'" McCloud continued. "He's a self-made villain. He's smart, he's an inventor of sorts, and he's very resourceful. Also, I hope, he's fairly likable. He has a 'dog eat dog' view of the world. We get glimpses of how his upbringing shaped that. Superman I think, in a lot of ways, upholds the notion of the Golden Rule, not in a religious way, but in the secular notion of 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you.' Fido comes from a school of 'do unto others before they do unto you.' Fido believes any past injustice justifies what you do to get even. He has more of an 'ends justify the means' way of looking at things."
