DC Comics Presents: Superman

June 21, 2004: Stan Lee Writes Superman for Julie Schwartz Tribute Issue

Stan Lee, the man who built the silver age of Marvel Comics, has written a Superman story which will appear in the up-coming DC Comics Presents: Superman, a tribute issue to Julie Schwartz, set to be released on August 8th.

The Pulse questioned Stan Lee about his story and about his relationship with Julie Schwartz. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

"I was happy to do that Superman story in the DC tribute to Julie because I had such fond memories of him from the many times we had met at conventions," added Lee. "I was asked to do a story based on a cover drawing I was shown. After seeing the drawing, it only took a few minutes to dream up the idea. I really wasn't all that familiar with the Silver Age Superman. In fact, I couldn't tell you the differences between the Silver Age Superman, the Golden Age Superman, the Tin Age, the Brass Age, or any of the other ridiculous ages that people keep coming up with when discussing the comics."

Like a lot of the other contributors to this event, Lee wasn't familiar with the source work. "I hadn't read that issue prior to my assignment," said Lee. "In fact, I don't think I've read it yet. The only 'teaser' I can give you about my DC Comics Presents story is -- I tried to do it as a humor strip. So if the readers don't think it's funny, I failed big time!"
